Holiday Eating with Diabetes

When dining out, ask for sauces and dressings to be served on the side to control your portions.

Is holiday food a stressor for you or someone you know? It can be if you or a family member are managing Type 2 Diabetes. Food affects how we feel and overindulgence or eating high-fat or sugary foods can cause blood sugar and blood pressure issues.

To have a happy and healthy holiday season, it is important to make the best decisions for your health. Tips to help you make the best decision regarding diabetes and healthy habits during the holiday season include:

~ When dining out:

  • Choose whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and healthy fats.
  • Choose foods that begin with grilled, sautéed, baked, boiled, steamed, and roasted.
  • Ask for sauces and dressings to be served on the side to control amounts.

~ Offer to bring a homemade salad, vegetables, or a side of fresh fruit for potlucks, family dinners, or office parties.
~ Fill up first by eating raw vegetables, low-fat cheese, or low-fat deli meat before you eat your meal.
~ Drinking water before the meal and during also helps.
~ Don’t forget to maintain regular exercise.

Being aware of what’s on your plate and staying physically active will help you enjoy your holiday meals with the ones you care about. The Garland County Extension Service wishes you a wonderful healthy and happy holiday season.
