11-Year-Old Photographer: A Look into the Mind

By Cora Fisher
I am Cora Fisher. I am eleven years old, and though I have wanted to for many years, I have just started photography last December. I have been interested for as long as I can remember. I would mess with my mother’s camera and take pictures of my parents, making them pose and create funny expressions.

I have now turned that dream into reality. The very first thing that made me want to do photography was watching my mother when I was little.

Never too old was a shot I thought I’d never have the opportunity to take.
Silhouetted Daydream was taken in the early dusk after a walk with the dog.
Happiness in a world of fear was a shot taken before the model actually posed.

But last December, I decided I wanted to because I had watched a handful of videos of ballerinas being photographed. It wasn’t the ballerinas themselves but the way of the contrasting and the emotion that came through the photo.

Now, photography to me is a passion, a hobby, or even a dream come true. I’ve had many opportunities to share my photography, and I thank everyone who has given me these opportunities.

I take photos of humans mostly, but really anything that catches my eye. A pretty patch of mushrooms, a barn, or a stranger I thought would look just lovely in a photo. When I take photos, I like it to be in the middle of a movement. Whether that be reaching down to a typewriter or looking at the lake on a small dock.

I always like there to be an emotion in my photos. Not just a photo of a person. I want an emotion to come from it, for someone to feel happy when looking at one, and then be brought back to childhood from the next.
Lighting is everything to me, though. If it’s bright, I’ll go in wanting happy photos. If it’s darker, I’ll try for a sad or mysterious photo. I try to put thought into everything in the photo. A small pen in the background can mean so much to me.

When I go out to do a photoshoot, I have no clue what I want to get. I just want it to be good. And nevertheless, some are good, but some are bad. I try talking to whoever I’m photographing. I let them choose what they want to do (most of the time). I feel that photography can turn some ordinary thing or human into an emotion or story.

Fairytale Grimm was a last-minute idea in a pretty patch of grass and is one of my favorite photos i’ve ever taken.
Once upon a morning was a struggle to get, but a beauty when captured.

I hope to grow up and have a part-time job as a photographer, maybe even full-time. I’ll just have to wait and see how things play out. I hope to learn all I can, even if it’s difficult and mesmerizing at the same time. I still want to know all I can to make my photography different from others, but in the best way possible.

I want to keep on with photography because it brings me joy and brings other people joy. Which gives me even more joy! Altogether, I do this for everyone’s joy.

I hope it brings you joy as well.
