Hanamaki Playland Pops Up at GC Library

Enjoy the hands-on learning experience of Mokuiku Playland.

Families in Hot Springs will once again have the opportunity to experience the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship and culture when Hanamaki Mokuiku Playland: An Interactive Experience from Japan opens November 1 – December 14, 2025, exclusively in the Garland County Library Auditorium.

The Hanamaki Toy Museum is known for its beautifully crafted wooden toys and its dedication to the concept of Mokuiku — “educational activities involving wood and trees.” This philosophy encourages children and families to explore creativity, sustainability, and nature through hands-on learning.

The museum’s first visit to Hot Springs in 2024 welcomed more than 1,200 visitors. While last year’s exhibit was free, this expanded experience will include a nominal admission fee to ensure its sustainability while remaining affordable for families.

The Hot Springs National Park Sister City Foundation and the Garland County Library are partnering to support this special event, providing volunteer assistance, host families for the visiting team from Hanamaki, and local coordination.

“We are thrilled to welcome Hanamaki Mokuiku Playland back to Hot Springs,” said Mary Zunick, Cultural Affairs Manager for Visit Hot Springs and Executive Director of the Hot Springs Sister City Program. “This exhibit is more than just a place to play — it’s a celebration of craftsmanship, nature, and cultural connection. It brings the spirit of our sister city, Hanamaki, to life in a way that is accessible to families here in Arkansas.”

Partners on both sides envision the possibility of establishing a permanent Mokuiku Playland in Hot Springs, offering a lasting space for cultural exchange and family learning.
