The Long Goodbye

In this age of fitness centers, dietary supplements, and various ways to stay healthy, a diagnosis of terminal illness seems so unreal. Yet, it is estimated that 1.5 million people in the U.S. are struggling with such diseases at any given time. 

Caregivers and relatives ride the emotional rollercoaster every day . . . handling discussions with the medical team, worrying about finances, feeling both inadequate and on the verge of burnout, and even struggling with feelings of guilt when they determine they need outside help. But most of all, watching a loved one’s decline is heartbreaking, and the mourning process begins long before the person passes. 

Although this situation is deeply challenging, there are ways to make this experience both meaningful and positive for both patient and caregiver. Here are a few suggestions to navigate this journey. 

  • Open and honest communication. Both are vulnerable and need to feel they can share openly how they feel. 
  • Create special moments together. Watch a favorite movie, go on a country drive, walk down memory lane . . . quality time can never be replaced. 
  • Allow your loved one to maintain as much control of their life as possible. It can be as simple as his/her morning routine . . . it gives a sense of empowerment. 
  • Create comfort. Creating a soothing environment with their favorite items, smells, and sounds helps reduce stress and anxiety. 

Most of all, nurture your relationship. Both need to know how much they are loved and cherished. The greatest comfort is knowing you are going through this path . . . together.
