The Power of the Ripple Effect

By Peggy Lindsey
People rarely consider how their actions impact the world. In fact, the majority of us go about our daily routines without a second thought. Yet, these behaviors unmistakably reverberate throughout our physical and social world. It matters not if one’s conduct is polite or rude, the influence spreads.

As we consider the pebble hitting the stillness of a pond, we notice the resulting ripples across the water. The fish, the ducks, and the vegetation are all affected, and change is caused through this single, simple act.

Take a moment to contemplate the importance of your own actions. Donating to the traveler on the side of the road allowed him to make it home to see his sick mother. Sharing a meal with the elderly neighbor provided the only nutritious food she would partake of that day. Hiring the teenager to mow the lawn permitted him to save up for college. Disposing of trash in an appropriate receptacle prevented animals from getting sick while keeping the environment clean. Checking in on a sick friend helped her to know she is loved and cared for.

Everything we do . . . or don’t do . . . will have an impact on our world, either positively or negatively. As Mother Teresa once stated, “I alone can’t change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

We begin to change the world by starting in our own homes, at our jobs, in our communities, and our towns. What kind of influence are you making today? You decide! And always remember how life-changing a single act can be.
