From Design to Drawing to Painting
Gary Simmons & Richard Stephens Art Workshop
The Hot Springs Area Cultural Alliance (HSACA) and Henderson State University-Hot Springs Academic
Initiatives are offering artists a unique workshop opportunity. Internationally acclaimed pen and ink artist, Gary
Simmons and internationally recognized watercolorist, Richard Stephens will be “Team Teaching” a three-day
workshop titled, “From Design to Drawing to Painting”.
This 3-day workshop will center on the importance of preliminary value sketches and basic drawing skills
as preparation to the actual painting. Both artists agree that drawing is a major problem for painters working in any
medium, but especially watercolor. Simmons will lead this aspect of the workshop.
Stephens will lead the painting stage of the workshop, helping students translate their value sketches and
contour drawings into finished watercolors. The objective is to provide several sequences of, first drawing and then
painting, in order to reinforce the skills and relationships between these two stages of creating and painting. Lots of
one-on-one assistance and input will be offered by both instructors as students work on the projects.
The workshop is in the Landmark Building, July 25-27. Hours 9AM-4PM, with a break for lunch. Cost is
$225. Artists must provide their own supplies. A Supply and Materials List will be available at sign up.
This workshop is a part of the “Teachers Are Artists Too!” art exhibit at The Landmark Building, located at
201 Market Street, Hot Springs.
