Resisting the Winds of Change

By Peggy Lindsey
The winds of change are blowing, affecting everyone now. Yet, we somehow feel the need to run the other way. Can the storm be outrun? No, but many oppose it!

Why do we resist change? Most humans have a fear of the unknown. Uncertainty is uncomfortable, so we relish what is safe and predictable. Change, when imposed upon us, can sometimes mean we’ve lost control over our lives, bringing a dose of panic into our otherwise familiar routine.

Humans are creatures of habit, so change asks us to break our patterns, and if we’re honest, that’s hard! It takes a lot of effort to release our old conditioning, learn new things, and adapt to different situations. Some people put up resistance if change looks too risky, asking the question, “Will I succeed, let alone survive?” On a deep level, people fear change may affect their most cherished relationships.

But change comes bearing gifts! The wind stirs up old, worn-out ways that require new breath and fresh perspectives. Are we willing to be intrigued about what might be possible as the debris of what’s no longer working is swept away?

Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese monk and peace activist, shared, “For things to reveal themselves to us, we need to be ready to abandon our views about them.” We are being given an opportunity to open up to new possibilities and come into trust.

Let’s give change a chance to help us discover unique options — alternatives that bring greater peace and joy.
