Winter’s Long Night

By Peggy Lindsey
Winter speaks to all life as the season begins each December. Squirrels are well stocked for the cold months ahead, bears are snuggled in for a long winter’s nap, and trees drift off into their deep slumber. And we, too, hear the annual message of winter.

As we move into the darker months, we are invited inward . . . the coziness of warm hearths, soft blankets, and cups of tea draw us into the quiet as evening comes early. Our gazes are gentle upon the flicker of candles and Christmas tree lights, igniting the deeper emotion of nostalgia.

The holiday bustle is real, and we certainly move through the season with joy and celebration. Yet, we, too, long for the peace and serenity that comes naturally at this time. It is like the silence just before the dawn . . . moments of reflection . . . of renewal . . . of hope. We know the light will soon return.

Perhaps we are called to ponder the light within us during winter’s long night . . . to nurture ourselves with patience, with rest, and tender loving care. We are worthy of this quiet time of holding sacred space for personal gratitude, for healing and letting go, for dreaming, planning, and preparing for the future!

As the wreaths of evergreen upon our doors remind us all that life cycles never end, may we each celebrate our own lives and all its gifts. So, stoke the fire, light the candles, and sip your tea. Let peace settle in . . . for the light will most certainly return.
