Attachment to Suffering

By Peggy Lindsey
Is it true that humans hate anguish and discomfort so much that we would do anything to avoid being in pain? We might think so! After all, none of us wakes up one morning and decides to be miserable. However, subconsciously, many do.

The number one cause of ongoing suffering is attachment. People are attached to situations, desires, possessions, and even old stories! They cling to dualistic views of “right-wrong”, “good-bad”, “better-worse”, and “me vs. them”. The limiting beliefs we often hold dictate what we can or can’t achieve . . . even the willingness to try. Many live in a regretful past and are devoted members of the “should-a, would-a, could-a” club!

You’ve heard the term “broken record,” where the same old tale is told over and over again. People really embrace their “Woe is Me” stories! Why do we keep telling them? What do we gain from sharing them? How are they keeping us stuck? Even if all we do is play it over and over in our own minds, we dive right back into the hurt, the blame, and the anger all over again.

Healing begins when we shift from our ego minds to our hearts. We can call forth the self-compassion and courage to disrupt the ongoing narrative.

This is huge, and it’s okay to ask for help – talk to a trusted friend, a counselor, to God. We are meant to feel alive every day! We were designed to feel peace and joy every day!

It is our right to live in happiness beyond suffering. Let’s begin now!
