Finishing Strong: Parker Byrd’s Season of Grit

Parker Byrd, making history as the first NCAA Division I baseball player to compete with a prosthetic leg, proving the season’s greatest wins aren’t always on the scoreboard.

By Rick Bontkowski
As fall rolls in, the crack of the bat grows rarer, stadium lights dim earlier, and another baseball season heads toward its close. It’s a time when players reflect on the year behind them, what they’ve overcome, what they’ve achieved, and what they’re still chasing. For Parker Byrd, this season was more than just a game; it was living proof that impossible odds can be beaten.

In 2022, a boating accident took Parker’s right leg and nearly his life. At the time, returning to Division I baseball felt like a dream out of reach. But Parker’s story isn’t about what was taken from him; it’s about everything he refused to surrender. Through countless hours of physical therapy, learning to move and compete with a prosthetic leg, and a mindset forged in stubborn resilience, he stepped back onto the field this year. In doing so, he made history as the first NCAA Division I baseball player to compete with a prosthetic leg.

When Parker joined me on The AMP’D UP211 Podcast, he spoke openly about the road back, about the grueling days in rehab, the moments of doubt, and the faith and focus that kept him moving forward. He didn’t sugarcoat the struggle, but he made one thing clear: perseverance is a choice, one you make over and over again.

His journey isn’t just for athletes or amputees; it’s for anyone closing out a chapter and looking toward the next with determination. As baseball season winds down, Parker’s year reminds us that the scoreboard isn’t the only measure of success. Sometimes the greatest win is simply refusing to quit.

This fall, as you reflect on your own “season”, whether in sports, work, or life, ask yourself what goals you want to carry forward. The game may end, but the will to play never has to.
