Balancing the Aspects of Self

By Peggy Lindsey
We are physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual beings. That may seem a foreign concept to some, but if we take a moment to look, we can see clearly how our human experience is made of each of these aspects.

What kind of relationship do you have with these parts of yourself? Are they in parity with one another? Maybe you live at the gym every day . . . or perhaps your mind doesn’t seem to have an “off” button . . . maybe you are constantly in worry mode . . . and, is it possible you are unaware of the very essence of life flowing within you . . .

We all experience these aspects in varying degrees. Ideally, we would be in complete balance, and that is our goal. To begin with, we need to know where we are today . . . what area are you the strongest? What needs more attention?

What does a healthy relationship look like with these aspects? Here are some examples:

Physical: good nutrition, exercise, enough sleep. Mental: positive goals, healthy coping of stress, learning something new. Emotional: expressing feelings, stay in the present moment, express gratitude. Spiritual: prayer and meditation, creativity, forgiveness.

In order for us to live our best life, we must strive to maintain balance, and the art of balancing for humans can be quite the challenge. As Jana Kingsford says, “Balance is not something you find, it’s something you create.” There is no secret formula . . . but simply awareness. When we come into balance, peace and serenity are the gifts it brings. And we can all use more of that in our lives!
