About the Cover

The Visitor

By Longhua Xu
Longhua Xu’s formal arts training began in 1971 under the Chinese National Arts and Crafts Company. He was one of 50 students in all of Shanghai selected to lead a new generation of professional artists following the end of the Cultural Revolution.

In 1972, at 18 years old, he rose to national prominence with exhibitions across China, including the Shanghai Art Museum. He was one of the youngest members in the Chinese National Artist Guild, with his works presented as national gifts to foreign dignitaries. One of his sculptures was selected to be in the Complete Works of World Master Sculpture (The End of the 19th Century to Present).

In 1989, he was invited to immigrate to the U.S. with the title of “Outstanding Artist” under the “Extraordinary Ability” program. In 1992, his sentinel work in America, Mother Nature, garnered praise from President Clinton for its impact. Many of his works have subsequently been published in the Smithsonian Catalogue of Great American Public Art.

Adept not only in sculpture, but also in painting, carving, pottery, and architecture, Xu often says, “In order to fully express one’s ideas, thoughts, and emotions, one must be proficient in all techniques of art. Since art is not separated by country or race, then it should also not be separated by technique or medium. This way, the expression of those ideas and visions is limitless.”

In 2019, he was recognized as an Arkansas Living Treasure for his carving abilities. His most recent work, The Visitor, is featured on the cover and is an homage to the inclusive nature that Hot Springs has embodied. Permanently installed in Wheately Plaza, The Visitor will be greeting Hot Springs visitors for generations to come.

Thanks to all who helped bring about a beautiful cover and another issue!

May you all have a blessed and joy-filled May! The Springs Team
