Finding Joy During the Holidays After a Loss

By Peggy Linsdey
The holidays are filled with gatherings with those we hold dear, yet this can feel profoundly different after the loss of a loved one. Instead of joy, the season can bring a sense of absence, longing, and sorrow. Yet, even amidst grief, it is possible to find true moments of light, connection, and meaning.

Honor your emotions. You can’t shut down your grief, but you can make room for moments of happiness or nostalgia. There is no need to force anything, just go with what feels right to you.

You may need to adjust your expectations of what the holidays might look like this year. Let go of any pressure to “celebrate” in the exact same ways. Give yourself permission to change up traditions or even skip activities if they feel too overwhelming.

Explore how you might honor your loved one. It can bring great comfort in keeping his/her memory alive. Perhaps light a candle, make their favorite meal, or share stories about them. Let this special person remain a part of your life.

Joy can be found in quiet moments . . . your favorite holiday song, the glow of twinkling lights, the warmth of a cozy blanket. Let yourself savor these simple joys.

Sharing can help, too. Volunteer to serve holiday meals. Make a donation in your loved one’s name. Simple acts of kindness soften grief and open the heart to connection.

This season, allow yourself to feel deeply, remember fully, and cherish the moments of light that shine through the darkness.
