Donations to Jackson House Go Far Toward Fulfilling Needs and Wishes

Janie Smith and Tammy Jones are preparing for the holidays the Jackson House way – fulfilling the needs and wishes of so many in our community.

Jackson House, for many of us, is synonymous with the unhoused population in Hot Springs. And though it does render services to that small group (it comprises less than 1% of the total local population), Jackson House reaches deep into the community. Its programs help the elderly, the disabled, the “working poor,” and, perhaps most notably, our city’s children.

In speaking last month with longtime executive director, Janie Smith, we discussed just how important the November and December donations are to this young group. Certainly, people often donate toys, stuffed animals, games, and diapers year-round; many of these donations are organized and stored in what Smith calls “The Christmas Room.” There, it is packaged in gifts, stockings, and bags, and distributed along with food during the holidays.

But an equally important group, often overlooked, are the town’s teenagers. They, too, receive items from Jackson House ranging from toiletries to clothing, balls, and even (yes) stuffed animals. I asked Smith what, if anything, can be donated in December to make sure their immediate needs (and maybe even some wishes) are met during the holidays.

While Director Smith urges that items be “gently used” if not new, she is not one to turn down a donation. She offered a list of items popular with older kids:

  • Deodorant, shampoo, shower gels, soaps, toothpaste, new make-up, and nail polish
  • Hair accessories such as headbands, scarves, clips
  • Hats, socks, gloves
  • Age-appropriate games, balls, books
  • Coats, hoodies, blankets

Jackson House also works diligently to fill over 1,500 stockings for children (including teenagers) each year. Put those coupons, bargain bins, and clearance aisles to the task. Even if you can afford just a handful of small items, rest assured that they will find their way into a Christmas morning gift or stocking.

The Jackson House Christmas Drive takes information from participating families in November through the 3rd week of December each year. Located at 705 Malvern Avenue, in Hot Springs, the main building is open weekdays 9:30 AM – 3PM. Stop in with donations or to shop! More information about volunteering, donating, or participating is available at JacksonHouse.org or on Facebook: Jackson House Hot Springs.
