Finding Her Groove With KUHS

By Alana Merritt Mahaffey
You’ve been there. So have I. We are the dial surfers, bored and floating between radio stations looking for just the right mix.

And local KUHS radio disc jockey Lacey Loo has been there. Like a lot of ‘80s and ‘90s kids, she made her own mixtapes perfectly suited to a style she calls “undefined.” Those tapes traveled eras and transcended genres. Decades later, she’s creating that variety and eclecticism once captured on hand-labeled tapes on her weekly show, “Undiscovered and Undefined.”

Lacey’s birth as a DJ is serendipitous. Five years ago, a friend invited her to cohost a show. “It was called Ladybits, and I was hooked.” Until then, Lacey’s obsession with a rainbow of genres didn’t extend past her own listening habits. With her friend as mentor, Lacey began learning the intricate multitasking required of DJs. “My biggest issue was how to push buttons,” she laughs, adding “How to play the ads or the breaks or fix everything when it suddenly goes silent.”

Five years later, she’s still bringing that eclectic groove she describes as “myriad music… that spans bluegrass to blues to local bands.” Tune in on Tuesday nights from 6-10 pm and be sure to follow the “Undiscovered and Undefined” Facebook page. Listen at 102.5 FM.
