Acknowledging Abundance

By Peggy Lindsey

It’s harvest time! All across America big farms and smaller gardens are cleared of their various crops, and we celebrate such bounty as we linger over the luscious foods which we so enjoyably dine upon.

The yield of such a blessing in our lives is sometimes taken for granted, however. Isn’t that the case for many of us? Are we really conscious of all that we are given? We have a comfortable place to come home to each day, but is our focus only on the rent when it comes due? We drive around town with such freedom that owning a car provides, but do we find ourselves complaining about gas prices or road construction?

One day while shopping in Walmart, I happened upon a young family visiting from a small country in Central America. They were in awe as they gazed at the abundance all around them! I realized then that, indeed, I took much for granted.

Experiences such as these offers us opportunities to observe more closely all the plentitude in our lives. Where do you find your abundance? Is it in the field of wildflowers that you feast your eyes upon? Is it in the treasure of books upon your shelves? Or is it in the closeness of friends who sit around your table? Riches are found everywhere! In the words of Eckhart Tolle, “Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.”

So, this year as we celebrate Thanksgiving and the blessings in our lives, let us vow to notice the bounty that each day brings!
