Abuse is Never Your Fault

Every year, more than a million women all over the world suffer abuse and it comes in many forms.

By Peggy Lindsey

Women of all ages dream of the happy lives they will enjoy with their beloveds beside them. A blossoming relationship overflows with love, tenderness, and consideration as each shows up wearing the mask of perfection.

“I have found ‘the one’”, proclaims many a bride, and they walk down the aisle of love to commit to their men “for better or for worse.” Thus begins beautiful, life-long love stories that are celebrated every year. For others, however, the reality of raw pain and heartache commences.

Every year, more than a million women all over the world suffer abuse at the hands of the men who profess to love them, and it comes in many forms: emotional (playing mind games), verbal (name-calling), technological (GPS tracking, Facebook sabotaging), sexual (forcing sex), and physical (hitting, choking, etc.).

It comes as such a shock when it first occurs. Her immediate response is, “what did I do wrong, and how can I be better?”

Her head is swimming with guilt as she berates herself for every shortcoming she can think of, and then does all she can to make him happy. When he comes home with beautiful flowers and sweet apologies, all is forgiven and she surrenders once more . . . until the next time.

Guilt is the number one emotion a woman experiences when abuse occurs, feeling it is somehow her fault that it happens. None of that is true! The abuser is completely responsible for his actions, and deliberately chooses to inflict harm. Ladies, being abused is never, ever your fault!

If you are currently experiencing abuse and want help, please contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 or visit www.thehotline.org.

If have you survived abuse, yet still struggle with emotional pain, low self-esteem, anxiety, etc., and would like to reclaim your confidence, your power, and your joy, I would be honored to assist you on your journey.
