Tarot: Strength/Lust for Life: VIII

By Michelle Crandell

Having mastered the Chariot, the Fool takes pride in his ability to trust his judgement. So, when he sees a maiden in the forest, a lion about to eat her, he charges to her aid. He reaches her just in time…to see her gently but firmly close the lion’s mouth.

“Sit down, my love,” she says to the beast. To the Fool’s amazement, the lion complies. “How did you do that?” he asks, “Are you a sorceress?” The maiden and the lion shake their heads at the same time. “No,” she chuckles, “The lion and I understand one another. When I request kindly, he agrees to do what I ask of him.”

The Fool stutters, “…but you used no power…why did it obey?” The Maiden gazes upon the Fool; warmth, generosity and gentleness emanate from her eyes. The Fool senses a heart so full of compassion he cannot help but relax himself.

The Maiden possesses great personal power. He would willingly do her bidding, for she is good. “I recognize why the lion lives with you, kind lady, but why do you choose to live with the beast?”

She replies, “The beast is filled with a wonderful, wild life force. I am in awe of his untamed beauty.” Then, she adds, “Yes, if he runs as his passion impels him, he could do great damage to himself or others. Together we make a most marvelous team, strong and kind.

“Ask yourself, dear Traveler, ‘What is there to love?’ before you ask, ‘What is there to conquer?’ Then you, too, will know Strength.”
