Choosing To See the Silver Lining

By Peggy Lindsey
Our human journey is built upon our blunders. No life is without its mistakes, lessons, and actions we aren’t proud of. Yet, these are the very building blocks that create our lives. Too often we attach shame to these events.

However, guilt and humiliation are never the answer. Do we scold a child who falls down time after time while learning to walk? Every attempt teaches the little one to try a different approach, to hold on to something sturdy, and to persevere. Our mistakes teach us the same, and we grow in wisdom and understanding.

When we look closely at ourselves and clearly see the missteps we’ve taken over the years, they tell a story . . . one that reveals the truth of what was done because of pain, desperation, and fear. All these events helped mold us into who we are today. We fell, but we got up again, stronger and wiser.

We can look back at our younger selves and know with certainty we’ve outgrown who we were. The hardships we’ve faced do have a silver lining . . . the thread that weaves us back together again. Different, yes . . . but whole. That thread is grace.

The trials we go through are not a waste. They help us become better. Because grace shifts us . . . it elevates us . . . taking the terrors of our story and transforming them into compassion and peace. We will always be offered a silver lining . . . but we must choose to see it. And when we gaze upon the fullness of our lives, a masterpiece is revealed.
