Children’s Dance Theatre Presents The Sleeping Beauty Ballet

Deanna Karlheim Stanton (Aurora) and Harry Warshaw (Prince Florimund) take on the roles as “Sleeping Beauty’s” principal dancers in the May production.

The Sleeping Beauty, one of the world’s most popular ballets, turns a near 135 years old. Its origins are unknown, a fairy tale passed down for centuries. It became most popular when long-time collaborator’s composer Tchaikovsky and choreographer Petipa, premiered the ballet.

Since The Sleeping Beauty’s premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, on January 15, 1890, Petipa’s original choreography has become a cherished part of the ballet tradition passed down from generation to generation. The ballet has become a popular part of ballet companies around the world and has even been turned into a Disney animated version, using many of the great sections of the score as music for the cartoon’s soundtrack.

The many demanding sections of the ballet will be presented by featured guest artists and local advanced performers performing the choreography.

Deanna Karlheim Stanton, a native of Clarksville, Maryland, will head up this year’s cast as Princess Aurora, performing the challenging role of the Sleeping Beauty. Stanton is presently in her twelfth season with Ballet Arkansas and is a longtime featured artist of the Hot Springs Children’s Dance Theatre Co. Joining Aurora as her beloved prince Florimund will be Harry Warshaw from Ballet Memphis.

The Hot Springs Children’s Dance Theatre proudly presents its own rendition of Marius Petipa’s original ballet choreography adapted for children as the spring production opening May 16.
