The Hot Springs National Park Sister City Foundation is thrilled to announce the return of the Arkansas Cherry Blossom Festival (ACBF) on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM at the Hot Springs Convention Center, 134 Convention Boulevard. This free, family-friendly event celebrates the beauty of Japanese culture and traditions, offering a day filled with performances, workshops, and interactive experiences for attendees of all ages.
Captivating Performances on the Main Stage
Festivalgoers will be mesmerized by live musical performances, including the powerful rhythms of taiko drumming by St. Louis Osuwa Taiko. Attendees will also enjoy an elegant performance of traditional Japanese dance by Masae Satouchi, a Kyoto native and founder of the New York Kimono Academy, accompanied by Dr. Kae Hashimoto Reed, who will also host an engaging Manga lecture and workshop.
Engaging Hands-On Workshops
The ACBF provides an opportunity for visitors to experience traditional Japanese arts and customs firsthand through a variety of workshops:
Yukata Experience (10:00 AM) – Led by Masae Satouchi, this workshop introduces participants to the beauty of the yukata, a traditional summer kimono. Attendees will dress in a yukata and wear it throughout the festival.
Kintsugi Workshop – Instructor Kurt Caddy will guide participants through the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer, celebrating the philosophy that imperfections can enhance an object’s value.
Tea Ceremony Workshop – Experience the tranquility of Chado, the Way of Tea, with Jennifer Huffman. Participants will learn about the cultural significance of this centuries-old tradition while tasting handmade Japanese sweets.
Ikebana Workshop – Sponsored by Adrian Kahn Fine Jewelry, this floral arrangement class for beginners and experienced practitioners will be led by Amira Matsuda, who will teach the Ikebana principles of balance and simplicity.
Taiko Drumming Workshop – Experience the power and energy of taiko drumming in this hands-on workshop led by Central Arkansas Taiko, with special input from St. Louis Osuwa Taiko. Learn the history, cultural significance, and fundamentals of taiko before trying your hand at drumming alongside experienced performers. If under 12 years of age, must be accompanied by a registered parent.
Fun for the Whole Family
The festival will feature an array of children’s activities, cultural exhibits, and interactive experiences, including the ever-popular Anime Cosplay Contest. Explore art displays, calligraphy demonstrations, origami stations, and Japanese storytelling sessions.
