AMP’D UP211: Breaking Barriers, Building Pride: The Jamie Gane Story

As Pride Month celebrates identity, resilience, and the right to live authentically, it’s an honor to highlight someone who embodies all three: Jamie Gane. A below-the-knee amputee, international athlete, and passionate LGBTQ+ advocate, Jamie’s story is a powerful reminder that adversity can be a launching pad for purpose.

Diagnosed at age 12 with severe plantar fasciitis, Jamie endured years of debilitating pain and limited mobility. His condition evolved into Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, leaving him wheelchair-bound and excluded from many adaptive sports due to classification restrictions.

But Jamie refused to accept that as his ending. At 16, he began advocating for his own amputation, a battle that took six long years. In 2017, he finally had surgery that set him free.

Since then, Jamie has blazed a trail in the world of adaptive sport, completing over 70 Tough Mudder races and earning a silver medal in the 2019 World Judo Games. Today, he’s ranked second in the world in special needs judo.

Equally impactful off the mat, Jamie uses his platform to address the intersection of limb difference and LGBTQ+ identity, topics often overlooked in mainstream conversations. His work promoting inclusion in athletics and beyond has brought him to major stages, including Buckingham Palace.

Jamie recently shared his extraordinary story on The AMP’D UP211 Podcast, where we discussed his battles, his triumphs, and the ongoing need for visibility in both the amputee and queer communities. In celebrating Jamie, we celebrate what Pride is truly about: the courage to be yourself, the strength to rise again, and the heart to lift others along the way.
