The Value of Feelings & Emotions

By Peggy Lindsey
Feelings are a part of you, and they are valuable to each and every one of us. Yet, we doubt this because we’ve been trained otherwise! Your feelings are the way your heart and soul speak to you.

Just like the GPS in our cars that helps us determine our current location and the best direction to go to reach our next destination, our emotions are the “Great Informers” on our journey through life, letting us know where we are on our path.

When we are experiencing higher emotional feelings such as joy and peace, they indicate that we are in the flow, moving along with grace and ease. But when we hit those lower emotional states, such as doubt, frustration, and anger, they act as warning lights on the dashboard of the car, letting us know something isn’t working properly. Can you see how valuable this communication is?

All throughout our lives, we’ve received the message that emotions – especially painful ones, are to be avoided. So, rather than feeling their emotions, people stuff those feelings deep down inside, ignore them, or shove them off on someone else.

This is called suppression. But suppressed emotions don’t go away! They will find their way to be expressed, often affecting the health of your body, your heart, and your relationships.

Although it can be an unpleasant experience, it is to our advantage to feel our emotions when they arise . . . our discomfort, pain, confusion . . . all of it. They have a message for you . . . and an important one at that!
