Breaking Free of the Echoes of the Past

By Peggy Lindsey
Life is not a bed of roses . . . nor is it a bed of thorns. Life is a combination of the wonderful and the awful with everything in between! Our past with all of its ups and downs plays a major part in who we are. That’s a fact. The circumstances we survived will always be with us.

Beautiful memories rest sweetly in our hearts, bringing smiles and laughter. Yet, entertaining the painful circumstances is another story. Often, we are easily sucked back into the trauma as we relive, yet again, the agony of that moment. It doesn’t matter what it was . . . abuse, death of a loved one, a relationship falling apart. Your mind and heart play the scene over and over again . . . a broken record that won’t quit. Why do we put ourselves through such anguish?

The emotions these memories provoke are happening in real-time as far as our hearts are concerned. We plunge deep into the stormy waters of torment every time we give attention to the very memory that caused us pain in the first place. We give our power to the past.

Breaking free consists of one thing . . . staying in the present moment. Echart Tolle says, “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” This moment . . . right here, right now . . . is the most powerful moment you have. Will you use it to rehash your past or will you create your future? Now, that is a powerful choice!
