Master Gardeners Help GC Library with Newest Eco-Project

The courtyard at the Library gets a new pollinator and seed garden.

By Erin Baber

We’re so thankful to the Garland County Master Gardeners for their help with our newest environmentally-minded project. They’re working with us to convert our courtyard greenspace into a pollinator and seed garden.

This is only the most recent of several changes the Garland County Library has made towards becoming more eco-friendly. Here are a few other ways we’ve made strides towards reducing our environmental footprint:

  • The Library stopped offering plastic bags in 2019 and now encourages the use of reusable shopping bags.
  • Parking lot lights are now high-efficiency LED lights that are night sky-friendly and reduce light pollution.
  • The Library has replaced many interior lights with LED bulbs and will continue to do so until all lights are upgraded.
  • The Library’s roof was replaced with a white finish, making the building more efficient. This and the updated LED lights have already dropped the electric bill by about 40%.
  • Library cards are now made from recycled plastic.
  • The Library’s free mobile app has replaced the need for physical library card replacements.
  • The new Little Free Libraries to be installed across the county will stop some withdrawn items from being discarded.
  • The Library’s new delivery service saves patrons money and resources needed to travel to the Library.

More improvements to come! We’re just getting started. Keep up with our progress online at Facebook: GarlandCountyLibrary and at www.gclibrary.com
