It takes dedicated volunteers to build a home for Garland County Habitat for Humanity.
It all started with a couple of retired guys who were tired of playing golf…or at least that’s how the story goes. It changes a bit each time it’s told, but the general concept remains the same – Garland County Habitat for Humanity (GCHFH) was started by a group of community-minded individuals who came together to give their neighbors a hand up, not a hand out.
Since the organization’s inception in 1995, the affiliate has continued to grow. In 1995, GCHFH built an average of one house per year. Fast forward 25 years, the organization is building an average of 8 homes per year and has dedicated 147 houses to deserving families in Garland County.
“Habitat is unique because it is more than a housing program: a decent, affordable home provides safety and stability. As a home ownership program, it helps low-to-moderate income families build wealth,” says Cindy Wagstaff, Executive Director.
From a list of a few volunteers in the beginning, Habitat now has a steady crew of volunteers signing up daily to help their fellow neighbors. The organization also encompasses three ReStores, a building material and home goods thrift store dedicated to putting its profit back into Habitat homes.
As Habitat for Humanity celebrates its 25th year in 2020, the organization is seeing the fruits of their labor. “We now get to witness families make their final mortgage payment, making it an exciting time to be part of Habitat for Humanity!” commented Wagstaff.
