An affirmation is a written or spoken statement about a desired reality, expressed as though it is already true or stated as though it has already happened. For example, “My income increases daily whether I am playing, sleeping, or working.” Guidelines for creating affirmations:
- State affirmations positively, harnessing the power of “YES.” Avoid don’t, won’t, can’t, not, etc.
- Be concise. Use as few words as possible to express your desired outcome. For example, “I embrace change and abundance.” (WHEEL OF FORTUNE)
- Affirmations can help you remember the meaning of a Tarot card. Two separate Tarot book authors, Mary Greer and Angeles Arrien created affirmations corresponding with Major Arcana cards. Some examples: JUDGMENT: “I see myself with clarity and compassion.” The EMPEROR: “I am a trustworthy leader.” STRENGTH: “I value my strength and my kindness.” THE CHARIOT: I am in charge of my life and I direct it in constructive ways.” Each affirmation provides the essence of the card’s message.
A well-constructed affirmation aligns the thinker with the thought, making it more possible for that thought to come into reality. Psychologically, affirmations help reprogram a person’s beliefs, helping them think more realistically, feel better, or become more motivated. Words have the power to create positive self-fulfilling prophecies. As Bloody Mary sang in South Pacific, “You’ve got to have a dream, if you don’t have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?’
