Embracing Our Vulnerability and Compassion

By Peggy Lindsey
Vulnerability is part of the human experience. As much as we would prefer to stay immune to the pains of everyday life, we cannot escape the challenges of being human. If we are honest, most of us run and hide when we see pain on the horizon. But that strategy — to banish or suppress pain — has never worked nor ever will.

Wounds, especially those we cannot see, easily find places to hide within us when we refuse to acknowledge and deal with them. And once buried, we are afraid to touch them. All sorts of emotions stand in the way … shame, guilt, and so forth. Healing is possible, but we need to reconcile with the wounding inside of ourselves. How do we do that? With compassion.

To refuse ourselves the embrace of our compassion when we are already suffering actually amplifies the pain we are already experiencing! Instead, we are to learn to hold close all that we are … to have no separation within us. We don’t need anyone else’s approval or participation to have the compassion we deserve. We simply choose to be present with our authentic experiences of pain and extend kindness to ourselves in every way.

Quan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion, teaches, “It is the compassion within you that is willing to love what you believe is unlovable, unforgivable, or lacking within yourself. Receive your own unconditional self-love and self-acceptance.”

So, our willingness to be vulnerable to our own pain truly deserves our utmost self-respect. Let’s start now!
