Dreams are a bridge between inner and outer worlds. So are Tarot readings. When reading for yourself, the “rules” used to interpret dreams can be applied to individual Tarot cards, a single reading, or readings for the same person over time. Some suggestions:
- Free associate to images that draw your attention. Focus on objects, colors, people, animals, numbers, suits, and symbols you see in a card or reading. Write them down.
- Explore the emotional tone of the reading. How does this card/reading make you feel?
- Who are you in the reading? What are you doing or not doing? How does the card/reading match your self-concept?
- How is the reading a message from the collective unconscious, your higher power, or the universe? Look for archetypical themes/universal principles.
- Choose a card and have a conversation with someone or something in the card. Ask questions.
- How might you change the outcome of the reading?
- What title would you put on the reading?
- Track your Tarot self. Record cards and themes that occur in multiple readings over time. Note changes in your progress toward the resolution of problems represented by specific cards.
- Decode symbols using your own associations first. The cards are messages for you and can be very specific to your own psyche. Refrain from using standard interpretations or the interpretations of others before you have thoroughly examined your own.
- Practicing dream interpretation can improve your ability to read Tarot and vice versa.
