Flavor 101: Here Comes the Pumpkin Spice!

By Eve Victory

It’s that time of year when everyone is showing off their pumpkins – for Halloween, for Fall and for food and beverage.  Everywhere we go, we are inundated with pumpkin spice something.  Even Little Debbie’s gets on this bandwagon with mini pumpkin rolls.

You can bring on the pumpkin spice right in your own home.  All you need is canned pumpkin and (5) ingredients in your cupboard to whip up a pumpkin spice treat.

Pumpkin Pie Spice

Just mix the following together:

3 tbsp ground cinnamon

2 tsp ground ginger

2 tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp ground allspice

1 tsp ground cloves

Store it in an air tight container and you’ve got that amazing aroma and flavor right at your fingertips.

Instead of shelling out nearly $6 for your grande Pumpkin Spiced Latte at Starbucks, make your own.  There are a million recipes available out there, but I’ve made this one myself, and it is lovely.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

2 cups milk

2 tbsp pumpkin puree

1 to 3 tbsp sugar, depending on how sweet you like it

1 tbsp vanilla extract

1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice, plus more for serving

1/2 cup strong hot coffee

Whipped cream, for serving

Add the milk, pumpkin and sugar to a saucepan and heat it until hot, but not boiling. Then add the vanilla, your homemade pumpkin spice, and the coffee and stir. Top it with whipped cream and a dash of pumpkin spice for garnish and voila!
