Let’s Not Kid Around with Our Kidneys!

By Dr. Annie Xu
March is National Kidney Month! Let’s discuss the importance of maintaining good kidney function and understanding chronic kidney disease.

The kidneys are remarkable organs that filter waste and remove excess fluid from the body. In doing so, they balance minerals and electrolytes which are essential for healthy bones, blood pressure regulation, and blood sugar levels.

Similar to how skin can heal from minor injuries, initial damage to the kidneys can be resolved if treated promptly. However, repeated damage can lead to scarring over time, resulting in permanent impairment known as chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD varies from mild to severe, with “end-stage renal failure” indicating a need for dialysis or kidney transplantation to sustain life.

The most common causes of kidney damage include diabetes and high blood pressure; however, heart disease, obesity, toxins, and various other conditions can also contribute to kidney damage.

Some signs of kidney disease include foamy urine, nausea, itchy skin, weight loss, and fatigue; however, it often remains silent and asymptomatic until significant damage has already occurred.

How can I protect my kidneys? Visit your primary care physician (PCP) regularly, stay hydrated, and maintain healthy eating habits. Many supplements have recently been associated with kidney and liver failure, particularly when taken in megadose amounts. If you are considering starting a new supplement or over-the-counter medication, discuss the risks and benefits with your PCP.
