When Relationships End

By Peggy Lindsey
We all have experienced the ending of a relationship. Saying farewell to those we are closely connected with is a deeply human experience that often comes with pain and difficulty. The emotional aftermath is different for everyone, but almost all of us face feelings of loss, confusion, and grief. Sometimes these changes in relationships are not caused by anything bad, but simply from circumstances of growth. Yet the pain of separation is real.

No matter how we lose people, we have to come face to face with the emotional impact. We need to feel our feelings, and grief is a healthy and necessary part of our healing. We especially need to be compassionate and kind to ourselves when we feel so vulnerable! Of course, we stay away from any destructive coping mechanisms that drive us deeper into the emotional pit.

When we have said goodbye to someone we shared much of our lives with, we have to reconnect with ourselves . . . our passions, our desires, what makes us tick! See the importance here? Eventually, we have to move on. Take it slowly. There is no timeline to healing, so don’t feel pressured to just “get over it”. Engage with life in ways that are meaningful. Love comes to us in many ways, so let’s be sure to reopen our hearts.

Life continues, and every day brings hope and healing. We deserve to be happy, and it’s up to us to choose to be so. And by putting one foot in front of the other, we will know when the time is right to welcome in someone new.
